My Job

I'm a corrosion engineering consultant, specialised in corrosion studies and material (of construction) selection, primarily for the oil & gas, chemical industries and power plant.

What is corrosion?
Corrosion is rusted (steel) products like this?

The corrosion product we see most commonly is the rust which forms on the surface of steel

Corrosion means more than just RUST.
  • The disintegration of an engineered material into its constituent atoms due to chemical reactions with its surroundings. -- Wikipedia
  • Physicochemical interaction between a metal and its environment which results in changes in the properties of the metal and which may often lead to impairment of the function of the metal, the environment, or the technical system of which these form a part. -- ISO 8044-1986
  • Corrosion is an irreversible interfacial reaction of a material (metalceramicpolymer) with its environment which results in consumption of the material or in dissolution into the material of a component of the environment. -- IUPAC
  • The deterioration of a material, usually a metal, that results from a reaction with its environment. -- NACE
  • Reactions of metals with species in the environment to form chemical compounds. -- EFC

Some common types of corrosion occurred in the Industries

General corrosion
Uniform corrosion

Hydrogen embrittlement

Mechanically assisted corrosion
Erosion (erosion-corrosion)
Fretting corrosion
Corrosion fatigue

The role of Corrosion Engineer
Corrosion engineer is for many organisation an engineer trained to recognise the nature of corrosion and understand the mechanics of corrosion process. With this knowledge, the corrosion engineer can make a faster and more accurate diagnosis, analysis and mitigation of any corrosion related problem; appraise the information presented; plan research to uncover new information; interpret and apply results of investigations when they are completed.
